The ASC offers a wide variety of activities to its members and the community. These activities and services are managed almost entirely by volunteers. Want to join the ASC? Click here for some very good reasons! Whether your reason is to volunteer, or simply to engage with other seniors in our community, it's rewarding and fun!
The Astoria Senior Center is open with certain guidelines. We will continue to notify members via email of any items of interest or changing pandemic news. We also send out a monthly electronic calendar.
We have some exciting information about the new Sorenson Room, which is available for private rentals. Read about it here.
The center hosts several events and activities such as potlucks, birthday parties, weekly bingo, line dancing, and exercise classes. The center also has free Saturday movies with free popcorn! We have several computers available, along with a copy machine. The computers help members stay in contact with friends and relatives, especially their grandchildren. This also allows members to surf the web, find information, and have access to Social Security and Medicare websites. Our welcoming front room, with plenty of comfortable couches and chairs, has lots of reading material to include magazines and periodicals.
The ASC has been offering classes through Clatsop Community College such as Exploring New Concepts of Retirement Education (ENCORE). The ASC also offers an excellent movie library. There are lots of card and board games available to play with friends. Another popular attraction at the ASC is the pool table. The ASC offers a bus service that makes two shopping trips per week to local grocery stores. Many of the members would not be able to live independently without these shopping trips. The bus also allows the ASC to plan trips outside of Clatsop County.
The ASC works with the community and volunteers in a variety of different ways. A mutually beneficial relationship between the Tongue Point Job Corps and the ASC began in 2003 when a group of students from Tongue Point painted the interior of the center. Since then, Job Corps students have greatly improved the facility with various projects including exterior paint and window replacements. Additionally, the culinary class preps hors d'oeuvres for the ASC's annual open house. The partnership is of obvious benefit to the ASC because the renovations made by students were necessary, and it was also a great opportunity for the students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen trades. Yet, perhaps the most important benefit to everyone involved is the cross-generational friendships that are formed.
Last, but not least, the ASC stays in contact with Northwest Senior and Disability Services (NWSDS) in Warrenton, Oregon, which provides senior citizens with pertinent services and information.
